Halloween ‘17: Bring Back Candy…Not Lice

You have your ghosts, zombies, witches, clowns (thank you Hollywood), and more spooky figures parading around on the night of October 31st. Each of these has varying levels of spookiness, but nothing lives up to the one scariest thing of all—head lice.

Oh, you thought lice cannot have anything to do with Halloween?

We regret to inform you that the last few days and nights of October are prime times for lice to make their mark in your children’s hair.

Let’s make sure your kids come home with candy, not critters. Here a few tips to help you enjoy your favorite masked holiday free of a possible lice epidemic:

Halloween costumes can contain head lice. Although lice cannot actually survive for more than 48 hours outside of hair, a number of people visit the same costume shop as you near Halloween. The same caps, hats and other costume pieces are tried on by many. Check and shake them well before trying them on.

If possible, bag up all costume items in a sealed plastic bag for a minimum of 48 hours before wearing them. This will starve out any lice still latched on to the items. Also, pop the washable costume piece in a wash and dry cycle to clear them or any surviving lice.

Make your children wear a swimming cap underneath any costume hats or caps. In case there are lice inside the head accessories, a swimming cap will create a safe barrier between the critters and your child’s hair.

Advise your children against sharing any personal items such as wigs, hats, caps, masks, etc.

Check your child’s head when the return home back from trick-and-treating. A more thorough step would be to get a lice specialist to perform a lice screening on your child to seek out a potential infestation.

The night of Halloween is a great time—digging out old ghost-y décor, scaring the neighbors with the creepiest outdoors display possible, and enjoying the delicious treats. The last thing you want is to have your kids worried with a scratchy head.
